Activity Tour Booking
Define trips as single-day activities or multi-day experiences for clearer itinerary planning and booking.
The Activity Tour Booking add-on lets you tell WP Travel Engine whether a trip is a single-day activity or a multi-day experience. A plugin (or add-on) is an extra piece of software that adds new features to your WordPress site. This one helps you organize your tours by how long they last.
Say you run a half-day city walking tour and also a 5-day mountain trek. With this add-on, you can set the walking tour as a single-day trip (measured in hours) and the trek as a multi-day trip (measured in days). Your customers then see exactly what kind of experience they're booking before they pay.
Why use the Activity Tour Booking add-on?
- Trip type selection: You can mark any trip as either single-day or multi-day. This keeps your tours organized and makes each one easier to set up.
- Better itinerary planning: Multi-day trips can have a day-by-day itinerary. Single-day trips get a clean, streamlined format. You're not forced into a one-size-fits-all layout.
- Clearer booking experience: Your customers can tell at a glance whether they're signing up for a few hours or a full week. That means fewer questions in your inbox and fewer surprises on the trail.
What you'll need before you start
- You'll need WP Travel Engine and WP Travel Engine Pro installed and activated on your site. A plugin is a small software package that adds features to WordPress. "Activated" means it's turned on and ready to use. If you haven't done this yet, you can follow the guide to installing and activating Pro add-ons.
- If you're using Activity Tour Booking, you'll also need to activate the Trip Fixed Starting Date add-on.
Setting up the Activity Tour Booking add-on
Step 1: Install the add-on
Before you can use Activity Tour Booking, you need to install and activate it on your WordPress site. This is the same process you followed for WP Travel Engine Pro. If you need a refresher, the installation and activation guide walks you through it step by step.
Once the add-on is activated, you're ready to configure your trips.
Step 2: Choose the trip type for a trip
This is where you tell WP Travel Engine how long a trip lasts and what kind of experience it is. The setting you pick here changes how the trip appears to your customers on your website.
Open your trips list
In the left sidebar of your WordPress dashboard, click Trips. You'll see a list of all the trips you've created so far.
Open the trip you want to edit
Click Edit on the trip where you want to set the trip type. This opens the trip settings page where you can change details about that tour.
Find the Trip Type option
Scroll through the trip settings until you find the Trip Type option. It's the setting that controls whether this tour is treated as a one-day activity or a longer journey.
Pick the right trip type
Choose the option that matches your tour:
- Single Day / Activity: Pick this for day tours that don't include an overnight stay. The trip duration is measured in hours. For example, a 4-hour snorkeling trip or an 8-hour city sightseeing tour.
- Multi Day: Pick this for trips that span multiple days with overnight stays. The trip duration is measured in days. For example, a 3-day desert safari or a 7-day trek through the mountains.
Save your changes
Click Save Changes (usually near the top right of the page) to apply the settings. Your trip is now set up as either single-day or multi-day.
That's all there is to it. The trip type is now saved, and your website will show the right information to your customers.
What your customers see on the booking page
Once you've set the trip type, it shows up on your website automatically. Here's what changes for your customers:
- They can see whether a trip is single-day or multi-day before they book. This helps them know what to pack and plan for.
- Multi-day trips can display a detailed day-by-day itinerary. A traveler booking a 5-day trek can see exactly what happens on each day, which builds confidence and helps them decide.
- Single-day trips show the essential details in a clean, compact format. No clutter, no confusion. A traveler looking at a half-day cooking class sees the time, price, and meeting point without scrolling through anything extra.
How it works in practice
Here's a quick walkthrough of how this plays out when you're setting up a real tour:
- You create a new trip in WordPress and select Multi Day as the trip type.
- Because it's a multi-day trip, the system lets you add a detailed itinerary for each day. You can write what travelers do on day 1, day 2, and so on.
- A customer visits your website, reads the itinerary breakdown, and books the trip with a clear picture of what each day looks like.
- If you had selected Single Day instead, the system would show the essential trip details in a streamlined format. No day-by-day breakdown needed for a 3-hour walking tour.
When to use each trip type
Not sure which option to pick? Here are some common scenarios:
- Day tours: Use Single Day / Activity for short trips like sightseeing tours, adventure activities, or guided walks. These are trips where travelers come back the same day.
- Extended journeys: Use Multi Day for longer excursions with overnight stays. Think multi-day treks, camping tours, or cross-country road trips. These benefit from a detailed itinerary so travelers know what each day involves.
- Custom trip packages: If you offer trips of varying lengths, you can mix and match. A 2-hour kayak rental gets Single Day. A 4-day river expedition gets Multi Day. Each trip gets the format that fits it best.
Good to know: You can change the trip type at any time by editing the trip and selecting a different option. If you switch a trip from Multi Day to Single Day, the day-by-day itinerary you previously added won't be deleted, but it won't show up on the booking page until you switch back to Multi Day.
Wrapping up
The Activity Tour Booking add-on gives you a straightforward way to sort your trips by duration. Whether you're running a 2-hour city walk or a 10-day expedition, setting the right trip type helps your customers know exactly what they're booking and helps you keep your tours organized.
