Currency Converter

The Currency Converter Add-on allows you to display trip prices in multiple currencies so travelers can view costs in their local currency. This makes booking easier for international customers, reduces confusion, and improves user trust.

Instead of showing only your default currency (e.g., USD), you can let users switch to other currencies such as EUR, GBP, AUD, or INR with real-time exchange rates.

ℹ️ Note: The checkout page will always use your site’s base currency. The currency switcher is only for display, allowing travelers to view prices in their local currency. At the final step of payment, the price will still be shown and charged in the base currency.

Prerequisites #

Before using this add-on, ensure:

  • You have installed and activated the WP Travel Engine Pro plugin.
  • The Currency Converter Add-on is installed and activated.
  • You have an API key from a currency exchange service (Free or Premium API key).

Feature Explanation #

You can configure the Currency Converter plugin via Dashboard > WP Travel Engine > Settings > Extension > Currency Converter. 

Enable Currency Converter #

Apply Currency Converter: Turns the currency converter feature on or off globally.

Apply Sticky Currency Switcher: Keeps the currency switcher visible on the site even while scrolling.

Show Currency Converter Before Booking Calendar: Adds the switcher above the trip booking calendar for quick access.

Currency Converter Title:  #

You can add a custom title for the converter. Example:

  • “Currency Converter”
  • “Check Prices in Your Local Currency”

API Key #

  • Required to fetch real-time exchange rates. You can sign into given platform for the real time exchange rate 
  • Choose between:

 License Type #

  • Select whether you are using the Free or Premium license.
  • Premium supports advanced features like faster updates and additional currencies.

Currencies #

Geo Locate: Automatically detect a visitor’s location and display prices in their local currency.

Auto Update Rate: Keeps your exchange rates updated automatically from the API.

Example:

  • On Monday, 1 USD = 0.92 EUR. A trip costing $1,000 shows as €920.
  • On Friday, 1 USD = 0.95 EUR. With auto update enabled, the same trip now displays as €950 without you doing anything.
  • If auto update was disabled, the trip would still show €920 until you manually updated it.

 Decimal Settings #

  • Decimal Digits: Choose how many decimal places to show after converting the price. (e.g., 2 → $120.50).
  • Decimal Rounding:  Enable the toggle to round the converted prices for a cleaner display (e.g., $120.50 → $121).

ℹ️ Note: Please note that the above setting won’t work for Geolocated Currency, Base Currency, and Zero decimal currencies.

Add Currency #

  • Click on the Add Currency button to add the currency that you want to display in frontend. 
  • Add any currency code from the dropdown.
  • Each added currency will display with the exchange rate relative to your base currency.
  • Example:
    • Bahraini Dinar → 0.377
    • Afghan Afghani → 71.255
    • Australian Dollar → 1.67983
    • Croatian Kuna → 7.02062

You can:

  • Manually edit exchange rates (if you want fixed custom rates).
  • Update all rates with one click using your API key.

Tips #

  • Use Geo Locate to instantly show customers prices in their local currency.
  • Keep Auto Update Rate enabled for the most accurate pricing.
  • Add only the most relevant currencies (to avoid clutter).
  • If your target market is specific (e.g., Asia and Europe), enable currencies most used in those regions.

Troubleshooting #

  1. Currency converter not showing
    • Make sure the add-on is enabled under Extensions → Currency Converter.
    • Check if the API key is valid and active.
  2. Exchange rates not updating
    • Ensure “Auto Update Rate” is enabled.
    • Verify API request limits (Free keys may have daily limits).
  3. Wrong currency displayed
    • Disable “Geo Locate” if it conflicts with your site’s setup.
    • Manually set preferred default currencies.

Do I need an API key for the converter to work? #

 Yes, the API key is required to fetch real-time exchange rates. You can use a free key for basic usage or a premium key for higher limits and faster updates.

Can I set my own exchange rates? #

 Yes. You can manually enter rates for each currency if you want fixed prices.

How often are exchange rates updated? #

 If “Auto Update Rate” is enabled, rates update automatically based on your API provider’s refresh frequency.

Can I show only specific currencies? #

 Yes, you can add only the currencies you want to show in the “Add Currency” section.

Will the customer pay in their selected currency? #

 No. Payments are always processed in your site’s base currency. The converter is for display purposes only.
